Driving from Western to Eastern Etosha
During the drive from West to East, we did not cross a lot of vehicles, in fact we had the feeling that we were the only ones on the road. This quickly changed when we entered the East side. When wildlife was spotted, several vehicles were standing next to the road.
We stopped at Okaukuejo, the main camp of the park situated in the South. Here we fuelled up and we purchased some necessities for the next days. We could not stay until the evening because our tented camp was located in the East, but they had a waterhole that was illuminated and that attracted a lot of animals. Here you could also spot for example the black rhino. This is definitely a place that we would consider for a next visit.
When driving through the park we suddenly encountered a herd of elephants after a turn in the road… Not sure what we had to do, but we had to decide quickly. We could either slowly drive backwards and get out of their way or stop the motor and hope they would pass without too much of an interest in our vehicle. We decided on the last option and luckily it worked out fine. The herd stepped into the grass at the other side of the road a few meters before reaching us… oooffff we could breath again ! Besides the fact that it was a scary moment, it was also magical to see these animals from so close by.
We then passed by the Halali Camp where we stretched our legs. We walked to their waterhole known for wildlife spotting during the day as well as the night and hoped we would get lucky… unfortunately no lions nor leopards… but still a nice stop.
Western Etosha and Onguma Tented Camp
After passing the Namutoni Camp, we left the national park through the Von Lindequist Gate.
Our tented camp, ‘Onguma Tented Camp’ was located a short drive from there. The camp was really impressive and the tents so beautiful! Onguma means ‘the place you do not want to leave’… and I can only confirm that statement.
The views were spectacular. Watching the animals come to drink at the waterhole was an activity in itself… Also the food was very impressive. We would love to come back here in the future.
The next day we took part in other game drives and again we were very happy with the results. We spotted a lot of wildlife.
Such a pity that our trip was coming to an end.
