Boat Safari in Tortuguero
Today we visited the canals of Tortuguero. The weather was not fantastic, there was quite some rain during the morning so we were a bit soaked. Because of the high temperature, it was difficult to cover ourselves with the plastic raincoats.
The afternoon was a bit better but still not the weather we had hoped for. This was also the reason why we spotted less wildlife than what I remembered from my previous visit. But at least we saw a lot of birds. The absolute highlight of the day was definitely a sloth with baby.
The boat safari was still a nice experience, notwithstanding the precipitation.
Then it was time to start packing because the next day we would travel to Arenal (i.e. the area of the volcano with the hot springs).
Last morning in Tortuguero
Today the sun came out and how… We were very happy that we did not have this yesterday during the boat safari’s. Sitting a couple of hours in an open boat with life jackets on, would have been impossible to endure. However, it was the best weather to spot lizards and iguanas because they were recharging their batteries now.
What we saw sporadically the previous days was now abundant. We had seen most of the animals except crocodiles. Sad to leave this wonderful place, we stepped in the boat for our transfer to Pavona (the place where all boats wait for their passengers).
On the way back we came across 2 crocodiles. Were we lucky or not ? Unfortunately, we were sitting in a boat that was moving, so impossible to take a decent picture.
After half an hour of waiting in Pavona, our transport to Guapiles had arrived. We took the only road back, which was full of potholes, and arrived a bit shaken up in the restaurant. It was the same one as the day of our transfer to Tortuguero. The lunch was again a buffet with my favorite food: rice, black beans and fried banana. Of course there was also chicken, pork, vegetables and cold salads… It might be difficult to believe, but I could eat the typical beans and fried banana’s every day. And this for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I was definitely going to miss it :-).
Within the hour, our transfer for Arenal arrived. We estimated that it would take about 1.5 to 2 hours to arrive at our next destination. The first thing that we were going to do upon arrival ? Visit of the hot springs. Rain or no rain !
