Today was definitely the unforgettable waterfall day during our 3 week Ring Road trip. We had some very famous and some lesser known waterfalls on our planning.
The weather had improved significantly compared to the previous days and this made our visits so much more enjoyable. We first passed a few, as I like to call them, ‘mini waterfalls’. They were not ‘mini’ at all but only seemed like that when compared to their more famous sisters that we would see later… In Belgium waterfalls like these would be mega attractions. We were therefore very pleased with ourselves that we had decided to stop at both Urriðafoss and Ægissíðufoss, especially because we had them completely to ourselves.
Then it was time to see the well-known ‘Seljalandsfoss’, the one where we could walk behind (with a good raincoat and rain pants on of course !). It was a popular stop for the tourist buses and it showed! But the number of visitors was still far below the pre-covid level.
We continued to the 700 meters further located Gljúfrabúi waterfall. Here we had to enter through a cave opening and a stream, but luckily there were a few boulders that helped us keeping our feet dry.
Next stop Skogafoss, another famous attraction on the Ring Road. When we arrived at the parking lot, many visitors were standing in front of the waterfall. I thought it would be impossible to photograph the falls without people in it. But as we approached the waterfall, everyone had miraculously disappeared… My prayers had been answered. It was a shame that there was no sun because it seemed that the rainbows were very popular here! We decided to walk up the stairs to view the waterfall from above. OMG, how many stairs did we have to climb? I did not count them but I often had to stop to catch my breath.
At the top of the falls was the starting point of a four-day hike. We had read that it was really worth to do part of it as the views were fantastic and there were many more waterfalls to admire.
The weather was still good so we decided to walk a few kilometers along the canyon. This was SO BEAUTIFUL! A real highlight of the day. Most visitors, if they would even make the effort to climb the stairs, only continued till the first waterfall… A big miss because what we got to see was hard to describe with words. What a fantastic experience!
Then we drove to the museum and paid for the car park. Normally you do no need to pay when visiting the museum, but we came to visit the ‘Kvernufoss’ waterfall which could be found after a short walk. It was also a waterfall where we could go behind. Again we were so lucky since there was only one family ahead of us, so after a few minutes, our photo shoot could start.
Then we continued our drive towards Vík where we checked in at the Black Beach Suites. The accommodation was perfect and the view fantastic…
After settling in, we decided to catch a glimpse of Reynisfjara before heading to the store for purchasing some food. Reynisfjara was the Black Sand Beach with its sneaker waves and puffins. I was thinking when our luck would run out as puffins would normally already have left 1-2 weeks ago. Unfortunately they were a bit too far to get nice close-up pictures but just seeing them was more than enough!
What a fantastic end to our day! Not sure if there was anything left to top this.
Amazing pictures!
Thank you so much 😊
