On our way to St Helens
On our way to St. Helens and the Bay of Fires, we stopped at the Bridestow Lavender Estate, a lavender farm. No lavender in sight at this time of the year but still a nice place to stretch the legs and to enjoy an iced latte or a lavender ice cream. Even if these purple ice cream cones looked very photogenic, we did not try them because we were afraid that it would taste too much like perfume.
We then drove towards St Columba Falls. Not an easy task to find a parking spot along the road there, but we managed and the short hike of 1.2 km was really worth it. It was definitely one of the most impressive waterfalls of our trip, but extremely difficult to capture its power in a picture.
St Helens and The Bay of Fires – The Gardens
We then continued our way to St Helens and we checked in in the Sweetwater Villas for the next 2 nights. We were really pleased with our choice of accommodation and would certainly return there. Before dinner we went for a walk at Beauty Bay. It was very calm there, we practically had the place to ourselves.
The next morning was grey and rainy but we decided to take a chance and to drive to the Bay of Fires with our first stop ‘the Gardens’. Wowww this place was sooo beautiful… it looked like paradise, white sand, blue sea and orange coloured boulders.
In the meantime it had stopped raining and the sun appeared. We went for a beach walk and we were thinking how nice it would have been to swim here. But the temperature was not so high and the water was very cold. We then drove back towards St Helen making several stops along the way to enjoy the views. This must be the most beautiful place on earth! Maybe a good spot for our retirement… the only thing you need here is a fishing line !
The Bay of Fires – Binalong Bay
We drove to Binalong Bay and yes, the paradise continued! This was definitely the most amazing day that we had so far! We had seen already so many beautiful landscapes so we could hardly believe that it could still get better.
We stopped at an oyster farm but we were too early, the oysters would only be ready for sale in 2 hours. We then decided to drive to the bay were we had spotted earlier a fish shop called Skippers where they sold oysters and Fish & Chips. It seemed that we were just in time to buy half a dozen because the guide of the Chinese party that entered the shop just before us had ordered all the rest. Next batch would arrive only in 2 hours… so we decided to try the Captain’s Fish & Chips version to comfort ourselves and it did not disappoint.
The day after we took a slow start since the distance to Freycinet National Park was not that far.
