Today we had scheduled a long drive of 4.5 hours to Salt Lake City. The drive was scenic at the start even if it rained. When we arrived in Salt Lake City the sun finally came out.
We checked in in the Crystal Inn Hotel & Suites (downtown). We then walked to the Mormon centre and visited the 26th floor of the Church Office Building from where we had a spectacular view over the entire city and Capitol Hill.
We then continued to ‘The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Conference Center’ for a free guided tour. The building was certainly impressive and so was the organ that counted 7667 pipes. The large steel beams that held up the ceiling were imported from Belgium. The center could accommodate around 21,000 people and is the biggest in the world. During an earlier visit in 2009, I had understood that during the bi-annual conferences, all languages were translated simultaneously (unique in the world).
We continued our visit to the tabernacle where the choir gave performances. The temple itself was not accessible for tourists, entering was only allowed for members.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has also the world’s largest genealogical library.
Last stop on our list was the visitors centre. So why didn’t we go immediately to the visitor center? Well, I already visited Salt Lake City in 2009 and I knew exactly what I wanted to show to Koen 🙂
We then walked back to the hotel and searched the internet for a nice restaurant … and we found a fantastic one! It was the Japanese restaurant ‘Takashi’. We can only say, if you love sushi and you happen to be in the neighbourhood, do not hesitate and book ! It was really one of the best experiences of the entire vacation.
