First impressions of Hobart
Last leg of our trip, Hobart! We were a little sad that our journey was coming to an end. The 3 weeks had flown by so quickly and we felt there was still so much to discover. Even if we had stayed 2 days in most places, we always had to make choices on what to do and what to skip… such a pity that the island is so far away.
First excursion of the day ‘MONA’, the museum of Old and New Art. I devoted a separate post to it. It is a definite must-see when you are in Hobart!
After our visit, we checked in in The Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel, we had booked a studio apartment for the next 3 nights and it was perfectly located for discovering the city (when you book directly with the hotel, parking is for free).
Before dinner, we quickly went for a stroll at the Hobart Waterfront. We ordered some take away and had a quiet evening since the next day we had to leave early for the ferry to Bruny Island. You will find also a separate post on Bruny… a place that is a must-visit for foodies !
The Drunken Admiral in Hobart
After our return from Bruny, we had booked ‘The Drunken Admiral’ restaurant at the harbour, a place mostly frequented by tourists. The decoration, based on the inside of a ship was magnificent, completely over the top but so funny that you should not miss it.
I had seen this restaurant on tv in ‘House Rules Tasmania’ a reality television series where couples had to renovate each other’s homes. I already decided then, that this would be the perfect place for the celebration of Koen’s birthday. The food was very good, the portions very big (too big in fact) and it was here that we drank for the first time bottled rainwater that came from Antarctica.
Mount Wellington in the clouds
The next day we drove to Mount Wellington. It was raining when we left and while driving to the top, we ended up in the clouds. At the top, it was very sunny and we regretted having left our sunglasses in our apartment. No view of Hobart since the clouds covered everything. We did a little walk on the boardwalk and drove back down.
We stopped at Cascade Brewery, the oldest brewery of Australia. We did not have time for the 1.5 hour guided tour but we did a quick visit of the garden at the back.
Salamanca Place and Battery Point
After that, we drove back to Hobart city and went for a quick lunch around the harbour. Then we continued to Salamanca Place and Battery Point. It was a pity that it was not a Saturday so we could have experienced the famous market.
From there we continued to Battery Point. It was like going back in time, the houses where so beautiful… This was certainly a place where we could live! We stopped for afternoon tea at the bakery ‘Jackmann & McRoss’, oh my god, so many delicious cakes and pastries to choose from… We shared the velvet cake with double cream and it was very yummy…
Last dinner in Hobart & farewell Tasmania
For our last dinner, we had a reservation at ‘The Glass House’, located at Brook Street Pier. The view from the restaurant was really nice. It was a dining bar with a shared plate concept. The food was incredible so the perfect end to our holiday !
Back at the apartment, we started to pack our luggage while looking back at our trip. What did we enjoy the most? A difficult question to answer. Tasmania is for sure one of the most beautiful destinations that we had ever visited. It was an Island with 50 shades of green, white beaches, turquoise water and abundant wildlife. The seafood, the wine, the cheese… were excellent. Every day was filled with one or more highlights. The nature was enchanting, the views out of this world and the possibilities for hikes were endless.
